Not every patient with a blocked ear has earwax as the cause. Your doctor can assess and treat ear diseases including:
- Otitis media & otitis externa
- Eustachian tube dysfunction
- Sudden sensorineural deafness
- Vertigo and tinnitus
- Sinusitis and mastoiditis
Your doctor can prescribe antibiotics and refer to public ENT clinics or private ENT specialists where needed.
Before your appointment
To help with efficient wax removal, use wax softener drops for 1–2 days beforehand. Simple olive oil is safe and effective, or over-the-counter Cerumol or Waxol from the chemist. If you can’t wait, olive oil 1–2 hours prior will still help.
⚠️ Do not use drops if you have ear pain or a known hole in your eardrum — see a doctor first.
